The 2020 running of the Kentucky Derby takes place on the first Saturday of September and follows the Kentucky Oaks race which is always held the day before. The Derby, as it’s known to many, gained the nickname of the Run for the Roses due to the longstanding tradition of the winning jockey and horse being awarded a blanket of roses following their victory.
The race dates to 1875 with a field made up of three-year-old thoroughbreds including Stallions and Fillies, that have qualified by racing and winning in the “Road to the Kentucky Derby” qualifying races. It’s the longest continually held race weekend as neither the Oaks nor Derby have been missing since their inception.
While there are still traces to be run in order to officially set the field, we have a good idea of some of the horses that will be involved in the 2020 edition of the Kentucky Derby. Here are some of the favorites thus far.
Tiz The Law comes into the race at +800 and is the early favorite according to some oddsmakers. The stallion finished the 2019 race season with a third-place finish and a first-place run at the 2019 Champagne Stakes.
Authentic is another early favorite coming in with an early number of +1400. Authentic opened eyes with an impressive win at the Sham Stakes at Santa Anita. That performance instantly made Authentic a horse to watch during the stretch run of the Road to the Derby as well as the running of the Kentucky Derby.
